What is petrichor? Why rain smells so good

Do you know that moment right after a rain shower, when the air suddenly smells fresh, earthy, and almost green? Especially in a forest, this scent can be very distinctive. The name for this typical smell is petrichor.

Petrichor is the scent released when rain falls on dry ground, stones, and plants. The word was introduced in the 1960s by Australian researchers and is derived from the Greek petra (stone) and ichor (the fluid that, according to Greek mythology, flowed through the veins of the gods).

Where does the smell of rain come from?

The smell we perceive after rain is created by a combination of natural substances.

Geosmin plays an important role. This is a substance produced by microorganisms in the soil. When raindrops hit the ground, small particles containing this fragrant substance are released into the air.

Additionally, plants can release oils into their environment during dry periods. When it subsequently rains, these fragrant substances are also released.

Together, these substances create the recognizable scent of moist earth, stone, and greenery that we often associate with a rain shower.

Why does a forest smell so special after rain?

In a forest, something extra happens after rain. Wet bark, moss, leaves, earth, and wood all absorb moisture and release their own scent.

This creates a much more layered scent than just wet earth. For example, you smell:

  • moist forest floor
  • moss and leaves
  • wet wood and bark
  • fresh green notes
  • the cool air after a rain shower

It is precisely this combination that makes a forest after rain so distinctive.

Why do many people find petrichor pleasant?

Scent is strongly linked to memories and emotions. The smell of rain, for example, can evoke memories of a walk through the forest, a fresh summer shower, or the feeling that the air becomes clean and cool again after a dry spell.

Additionally, the scent of geosmin is perceptible to humans in very small quantities. This means that the smell of wet earth can become noticeable surprisingly quickly as soon as it starts raining.

Petrichor and the forest feeling

At Dennengeur, much revolves around recognizable moments from the forest. Not only fresh pines or woody scents, but also the smell of moist earth and moss after rain.

That feeling also forms the inspiration for After the Rain: a soft, earthy forest scent reminiscent of a quiet forest after the rain has passed.

Not literally a bottle of petrichor, but inspired by that same moment: wet moss, fresh earth, and the calm atmosphere of a forest after a shower.

The smell of rain in your home

The true scent of petrichor naturally arises outdoors. But with earthy, green, and woody scents, you can evoke that same peaceful forest feeling indoors.

Think of scents with notes of moss, moist earth, wood, and fresh greenery. Especially in combination, they can evoke that typical moment when you walk through the forest after a rain shower.
